ZestYou ARE What You Eat?

The common saying, "You are what you eat," should read, "You are what you absorb!"  The bottles of nutrient supplements lining the health store walls don't benefit much if we have damaged the 'microbe bridge' that facilitates their uptake.  Similarly, the best and most balanced diet will not deliver optimum nutrition in the absence of these microbial helpers.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently completed an exhaustive study of the link between nutrition and disease, and one finding of this research was the identification of a second type of malnutrition.  Many in third world populations suffer from Type A malnutrition, but the WHO research suggests that the majority of the populations in developed countries suffer from Type B malnutrition where serious mineral, vitamin and amino acid deficiencies compromise our health and our resistance to disease.

How can we possibly be lacking nutrients when so many people are classified as being obese?  Part of the deficit relates to mineral deficient food grown in mineral deficient soils, but the devastation of beneficial gut organisms is of equal significance.  One particularly good product, that is inexpensive, is the Ultimate 16 Strain Probiotic with Trace Minerals & FOS that is available at Swanson Vitamins.  They have good prices, and are a good, reliable source for these things.

ZestSources for PROBIOTICS

Our GastroIntestinal tract contains more than 500 species of bacteria (some say it may be 40,000) that help break down food, strengthen immunity, and ward off pathogens.  This community of about 9 trillion microbes together weighs up to 2.2 pounds, and outnumbers human cells 10-to-1.  That is right − 90% of the cells in your body may NOT actually be human!

Many of these microbes bind to the lining of the gut, help you digest, battle toxic intruders, and can stimulate the immune system.  They've also been credited (by some) with preventing or alleviating diarrhea, gastrointestinal diseases, yeast infections, and allergies.

You should be getting 3−5 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) a day, but 95% of probiotic supplements may not have 10% of what they report.  These may be killed−off if they get too hot, or were taken with a hot beverage.  We certainly do not wish to waste money, and particularly, do not wish to miss this benefit after going through such effort and expence.

Cultured Foods
We eat cultured foods all the time. We don't think too much about this, but cheese, butter, sour cream, and buttermilk are among the commonly used cultured dairy products.  The problem is that these foods must be Pasteurized before selling them.  That kills these good bacteria, and means you need to find a way to get these beneficial bacteria another way.

Raw, unpasteurized, fermented foods, like sauerkraut, salsa, sour pickles, and kimchi, are naturally high in good bacteria, as are some yogurts, kefirs, and stinky cheeses.  They can come with hundreds of diverse strains of bacteria and yeast microbes, multiplying as the food ferments.  You can learn to make these at home, spare yourself certain expeses associated with buying pills, and find that these Cultured Foods have an unrefrigerated shelf−life that make them good for whatever preparations you make for being without power or other public services.

What you can do easily and at little expense
Incorporating cultured foods into a well-balanced diet might come with the same digestive and immune benefits as taking supplemental doses of the probiotics and prebiotics in pill form.  In fact, what you may buy that gives you a few billion live bacteria in a pill dose could easily be as many trillions per serving of these great cultured foods.  There are good sources of info and products for this type of thing, and one very good source can be found at the following link:

This person was starting into the use of these cultured foods when she got a case of food poisoning.  Not being able to hold down any food, or even drink water, she sipped the liquid from the cultured vegatables and kefir she had been making.  This corrected the problem quickly, and convinced her that these good bacteria are an important part of our immune systems.

ZestWHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD BUGS GONE?

Nutri−Tech Solutions Pty Ltd (NTS) has recently begun in−depth research into human nutrition and its effect upon our health and wellbeing. Part of this research has involved comprehensive health analysis, monitoring all key nutrients, and evaluating criteria like digestive function, hormone balance, fatty acid balance and immune system performance.  Like WHO, we have found virtually all subjects to be nutrient deficient.  The mineral shortages, which appear almost universal, are magnesium, chromium, selenium, cobalt, iodine, silica and zinc. The chief vitamin deficits involve the B group. Around 90% of subjects are lacking Vitamin B2 and B12, but there are numerous subjects lacking Vitamin B5 and/or Vitamin B6.  Glutathione is the major missing link in the amino acid profile.  This nutritional analysis, also, covered measurements of beneficial gut organisms.  It is here that the problems really begin.  The vast majority of us suffer screaming deficiencies of these critical creatures and this is a health crisis which has not really been recognized is that beneficial bacteria are largely missing.  Where have all the good bugs gone?

Beneficial Gut Bacteria is assaulted on all fronts in our modern life style, and digestive difficulties are invariably linked to the loss of these tiny troops.  Many people are aware of the indiscriminate microbe−killing action of antibiotics and the associated need to repopulate following the completion of a course of this drug.  However, there is less understanding of other hazards that impact on our digestive capacity, like food stabilisers.  In reality, the beneficial gut organisms can be as susceptible to these additives as the food spoiling bacteria that are targeted.  Prescription drugs can impact on the trillions of digestive organisms that should inhabit and protect the gut system.

"Food stabilisers, for example, which 'protect' the processed food on the supermarket shelves, are microbicides, and it would be naive to assume that this 'stabilising' function ceased when the food enters our stomach."

Cortisone and other steroid−based preparations are particularly destructive, but many pain killers and anti−inflammatory drugs, also, disrupt that good bacteria in our gut.  Oral contraceptives are killers of this type of good bacteria, but radiation from x−rays, computer screens and microwave ovens, also, is harmful.

Coffee and alcohol can be damaging if consumed at rates exceeding three servings per day.  A can of cola (pH 2.9) contains around thirteen teaspoons of sugar and sufficient phosphoric acid stabilizer to kill−off the bacteria which would normally seek out this excess sugar.  This super−acidic, caffeine−based beverage is a microbiological bomb.  Diet drinks have other chemicals and their own set of damaging ingredients.

Chlorine is added to our water supply to kill bacteria.  Why would it stop working when it has entered our mouth?  Fluoride is also a microbicide as are many of the thousands of chemical additives in food, cleaning products, plastics and cosmetics.  Stress compromises good bacteria in the gut, and there is no shortage of this negative influence in contemporary life.

Agricultural chemicals can destroy the good bacteria in the gut of those who apply them, and any residues of these toxins can have a similar effect on consumers of treated produce.  Heavy metal accumulations in the body are almost inevitable in our toxic society, and the negative influence of these poisons increases with age.  Lead, mercury and aluminium overloads are typical problems, but recently nickel has emerged as a major biocide in the soil and in the human body.  The problem in terms of both soil and human health is that beneficial microbes are the most effective tool to detoxify heavy metal excesses, but the casualty rates are very high during the detox process.  The solution to this dilemma, from a soil perspective, is the ongoing addition of inocula and compost teas until we gain the upper hand.  From a human health perspective, there is tremendous benefit in regular supplementation with probiotic products.
