In working with terminally ill patients, Bob Beck encountered something he truly did not expect. There is, in too many of these terminally ill people, a secondary level that has benefits they do not intend to miss. That includes the kind and loving attention they get from family, and even strangers. It is, also, an acceptable way to bow out of difficult expectations.
